Another day, another drubbing of the New York Mets. Just when you thought the Mets’ 10-2 loss to the Cardinals last night was bad enough, they somehow managed to top themselves tonight.
It all got started in the first, when Mets starter Bartolo Colon was obviously without his best stuff. After giving up a single to lead off the game and another hit two batters later, Jhonny Peralta put the Cardinals on the board with an RBI ground rule double. However, that was only the beginning.
In the fourth, the Cardinals offense exploded. In total, nine Cardinals came to bat, and six of them scored. Jason Heyward hit a solo home run to lead off the inning and extend St. Louis’ lead to 2-0. Three batters later, Kolten Wong singled to center, driving in another run. After a walk by Matt Carpenter, Matt Holliday singled to center, scoring Wong from second. The next batter was Matt Adams, who slugged a three-run homer to right field, breaking the game open and making it 7-0 Cardinals.
To save his bullpen a bit, Terry Collins opted to send Colon out again for the fifth inning, which came back to bite the Mets again. Colon allowed the Cardinals to put together another rally, and ended up being charged with two more runs, making it 9-0, which would end up being the final score on the night.
Meanwhile on offense, the Mets had very little going. Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez shut them down, allowing just four hits and two walks over 6.1 scoreless innings. Lucas Duda had a pair of hits, and was the only Met who was able to do anything significant at the plate tonight.
The only bright spot on the night for the Mets was the bullpen, although it was in seemingly-meaningless innings. Jack Leathersich allowed one of the runners he inherited from Colon to score, but finished with 1.2 innings pitched having allowed just a hit and a walk while punching out three. For the second night in a row, Sean Gilmartin was called upon to eat some innings and was effective, throwing two scoreless frames. Finishing off the night was Carlos Torres, who allowed one hit in a scoreless inning.
That being said, tonight was certainly a two-sided loss with neither the starting pitching nor the offense being able to put together anything of note. The Mets are now 10-15 since their 11-game winning streak and for the first time since April 14, no longer hold a share of first place in the National League East.
