The New York Mets came up a run short on Wednesday as they fell to the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 5-4 at Tradition Field.

Pitching:

In his final tuneup of the Spring before his Opening Day start against the Washington Nationals, Bartolo Colon had mixed results against the Cards who tagged him for three runs in five plus innings of work. Colon failed to get an out in the sixth. He allowed six hits, walked one and struck out two, and ends the Grapefruit League season with a 7.02 ERA.

New Mets lefty Jerry Blevins came in with two on and nobody out and was quickly greeted by by an RBI single off the bat of lefty-swinging Matt Adams. He was promptly replaced by Buddy Carlyle who picked up all three outs in the sixth.

Erik Goeddel allowed two more Nationals runs to score in the seventh and committed an error. Then… Get used to this… Carlos Torres pitched a scoreless eighth and Alex Torres pitched a scoreless ninth. Or was it the other way around?

Offense:

Matt Reynolds continues to impress, lashing a pinch hit two-run double in the seventh to put the Mets on the board. in the seventh, and then lining a single to score Amed Rosario in the ninth to bring the Mets within a run. But it wasn’t meant to be as Kirk Nieuwenhuis struck out after Reynolds stole second to end the game. Boo….

David Wright went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts. Satisfied Brian?

Notes:

Daniel Murphy played second base and hit during an exhibition game against the Cardinals Triple-A team at Tradition Field on Wednesday. He hasn’t appeared in a Grapefruit League game since March 20 when he injured his right hamstring, but there’s still a chance he will be ready for Opening Day.

Bobby Parnell threw 27 pitches and was hitting 94 mph on his fastball during an exhibition game against the Triple-A Cardinals at Tradition Field on Wednesday. However he was tagged for two doubles and a three-run home run.

On Deck:

Matt Harvey goes for the Mets as they take on Lance Lynn and the St. Louis Cardinals at Roger dean Stadium at 12:05 PM.
