Tim Teufel

Current Position: Minor League Instructor and Club Ambassador

Age: July 7, 1958 (59)

Coaching Experience: Brooklyn Cyclones manager (2003), St. Lucie Mets manager (2004-05, 2008-09), Savannah Sand Gnats Manager (2007), Binghamton Mets manager (2010), Buffalo Bisons manager (2011), New York Mets third base coach (2011-15)

Tim Teufel spent six season with the Mets during his playing days. He was a key part of the 1986 World Series winning team in New York and has been loved by fans since.

Teufel has worked his way through the Mets system as far as coaching and managing goes. He spent seven seasons managing four different levels of the Mets farm system before receiving a spot on the big league coaching staff as a third base coach.

Though he was only the third base coach, Teufel played a vital part in the Mets 2015 and 2016 postseason runs. He also owned the spot as the infield coach. Replacing him after the 2016 season came as a bit of a surprise and was questioned by many fans and analysts.

During the 2017 season with Dick Scott serving as the infield/bench coach, the infield defense declined noticeably. Teufel, a second baseman back in his day, worked very well with the infielders in his five seasons with the big league team. He is very well regarded for his use of analytics, positioning infielders around the infield.

Teufel is obviously respected in this organization for his infield defensive wisdom. The position he was reassigned to last season was as a roving infield instructor. With the Mets infield as young as it is with both Amed Rosario and Dominic Smith set to start next season in the majors, Teufel should be on the 2018 staff.

Thoughts: Teufel has spent a good portion of his playing and coaching career with the Mets at the minor and major league levels. With that being said, he is familiar with the lifestyle that comes with being in the spotlight in the Big Apple. Mickey Callaway, who will need some support on the bench, could use someone like Teufel who has been here before and is a friendly face.

While Teufel has never managed at the major league level, he has enough on his resume that warrants a chance to be a bench coach. Regardless if he gets it or not, expect Teufel’s name to be tossed around over the next few weeks as the Mets round out their coaching staff.
