Jim Callis, Jonathan Mayo and Mike Rosenbaum of MLB.com released on Tuesday their list of NL East breakout prospects, selecting one player from each team.
Outfield prospect, Desmond Lindsay, got the nod for the Mets as a bounce back candidate after having a rough 2017 season where he hit just .220 over 251 at-bats at Single-A Columbia.
“He looks healthy, ready to go,” Mets farm director Ian Levin said. “We’re looking forward to what he can do now with a full professional season under his belt, think he’s in a very good place. All the tools and ability are still there, we just need to keep getting him experience and let it all develop.”
Lindsay, 21, was selected in the second round of the 2015 MLB draft by the Mets out of Out-of-Door Academy in Sarasota, Florida.
In 2016 between the Rookie League and Short-A Brooklyn, Lindsay clubbed four home runs and drove in 17 runs while hitting to a .303/.433/.451 clip in 37 games.
However, Lindsay has failed to truly blossom yet and is still a big question mark. Still, there is hope that he can refine his skills and breakout.
“Lindsay’s raw tools have long tantalized the Mets front office; he’s just had trouble staying on the field to refine them and turn them into production,” according to the MLB.com article. “Hamstring issues forced him to the second round of the 2015 Draft, a problem that persisted and kept him off the field for much of 2016.
“In 2017, it was an elbow injury, that required ulnar nerve surgery, that ended his season in the Class A South Atlantic League in July. Still, he’s No. 8 on the Mets’ Top 30 and there’s cautious optimism in the player development department.”
In addition to Lindsay, Ben Badler of Baseball America also listed infielder Ronny Mauricio as a breakout candidate in the Mets system.
