The trade deadline is just six days away and things are really starting to get interesting when it comes to the New York Mets. The Mets have officially proclaimed themselves as sellers, announcing that aside from their All-Stars, everyone is on the table to be moved. Here is the latest rumors that are swirling around baseball heading into the trade deadline.

Cubs Interested in Nick Castellanos, Eric Sogard

After Kris Bryant was pulled for Wednesday’s game against the San Francisco Giants due to knee soreness, Jon Morosi reported that the Cubs have heightened interest in acquiring another third baseman at the deadline. Namely, Nicholas Castellanos or Eric Sogard.

Castellanos, 27, has spent his entire career with the Detroit Tigers and is a career .275 hitter. This season, Castellanos is hitting .282/.339/.478, with 11 home runs and 37 RBIs. He is also leading the MLB in doubles with 36. With the presence of the Dodgers atop the National League, the addition of Castellanos would make a lot of sense for the Cubs as he crushes left-handed pitching. The Dodgers feature two of the best left-handed starters in baseball in Clayton Kershaw and Hyun-jin Ryu and Castellanos could play a big role in a potential playoff matchup.

Sogard, 33, provides the positional versatility that Cubs manager Joe Maddon loves, as he can play all over the infield. The Blue Jays’ utility infielder is in the midst of a career year, hitting .299/.363/.480, with 10 home runs and 30 RBIs. Whether the Cubs acquire Castellanos or Sogard, both players would be rentals as they are set to hit free agency following the season.

Twins Interested in Blue Jays Reliever

The Minnesota Twins have a close eye on the Blue Jays pitching, as they have already been reported to have interest in acquiring Ken Giles and Marcus Stroman. The newest Blue Jay that has piqued their interest is right-handed pitcher Daniel Hudson, Jon Morosi reports.

The 32-year-old reliever is having a solid season for Toronto, currently pitching to a 2.80 ERA across 45 innings pitched. Hudson has been on a great run of success as of late, as he has pitched to a minuscule 1.27 ERA over his last 18 games pitched. Hudson will be a free agent after the season.

Astros Trade First Baseman to the Dodgers

After watching what the Los Angeles Dodgers have done with rejected infielders like Justin Turner and Max Muncy over the years, any time they acquire a player of that ilk you have to take notice. Yesterday they did just that, when they traded for first baseman Tyler White.

White, 28, is out of minor league options and was designated for assignment by the Astros this past week. White was hitting .225/.320/.330, with only three home runs and 21 RBIs across 253 plate appearances with Houston this season. In trading White, the Astros landed pitching prospect Andre Scrubb. Scrubb, 24, spent this season in Double-A where he pitched to a 2.45 ERA and struck out 56 batters in 47 2/3 innings pitched.

Kansas City Royals Will Not Trade All-Star

Whit Merrifield has quietly become one of the best players in baseball, as he has led the MLB in hits for the past two seasons. The Kansas City Royals are nowhere near contention, leading several teams to ask whether the 30-year-old All-Star was available in trade talks. Well as Jon Morosi reports, the Royals are firmly telling teams that Merrifield is not available to be acquired at the deadline.

Merrifield, 30, made his first All-Star appearance this season and is under team control through the 2023 season on a great team-friendly deal. With his ability to play every position on the field outside of shortstop and catcher, Merrifield would be a fit for any contending team looking to add a solid bat. But it seems that the Royals believe they can contend at some point over the next five years and want to keep Merrifield as building block instead of as trade bait.

Madison Bumgarner is Unlikely to be Traded

The San Francisco Giants are one of the most curious cases in the MLB right now. On June 29th, the Giants were well on their to becoming one of the bigger sellers at the trade deadline with a 35-47 record. Since then, the Giants have gone 17-4 and are suddenly in the thick of the Wild Card race in the National League.

Madison Bumgarner was supposed to be one of the best starting pitchers available at the trade deadline, as the Giants would have looked to cash in on his prolific postseason resume to land a haul of prospects in a trade. Now it appears that the impending free agent will stay put at the deadline, as MLB reporter Mark Feinsand reports that the Giants are looking to contend after their recent hot streak.
