The Colorado Rockies have traded star third baseman Nolan Arenado to the St. Louis Cardinals, according to a report from Ken Rosenthal.
There are no confirmed reports for the players heading back to Colorado yet, and the deal is still being ironed out by all sides–including the MLB Players Association and Arenado himself. We will update when the final haul of players is confirmed.
Rosenthal says the Rockies will send around $50 million to the Cardinals to help cover the remainder of the nearly $200 million left of Arenado’s contract, which will last for six more years. He also says Arenado has agreed to defer some of his contract, further lightening the hit the Cardinals will have to pay the third baseman.
Reports earlier in the day indicated the Cardinals and Rockies were making headway on a deal.
While it was a good idea by the Mets to look into an Arenado deal, Joel Sherman today confirmed the Mets weren’t in on talking any deal for Arenado with the Rockies.
This is the second massive trade the Cardinals have made for a corner infielder. They will now enter the 2021 season with Paul Goldschmidt and Arenado manning the corners, making for one of the better corner pairings in the league. If Kolten Wong re-signs with the team, now we could talk about the team having one of the better defensive infields in recent memory, too.
