The Padres are working on signing star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. to a long-term extension, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

The exact details are not known yet, but it is said to be within the 10-year range. Pio Deportes said that the talk is about $320M and 11 years, Heyman added.

Tatis, just 22, has posted 6.5 fWAR and a 149 wRC+ over his first two seasons with the Padres. He came in third in Rookie of the Year voting in 2019, despite only playing in 84 games.

The Padres have turned themselves into legitimate contenders at this point, especially after acquiring Blake Snell and Yu Darvish. Extending their homegrown superstar would potentially make them a force in the NL West for years to come.
