The San Diego Padres have fired manager Andy Green, GM A.J. Preller announced, per a report from Scott Miller of Bleacher Report.
Green managed the club for nearly four seasons, finishing his tenure with 274 wins and 366 losses. He still had two years left on his deal.
The Padres finished either last or second to last in all three of Green’s full seasons managing the team, and currently sit in fourth place with a 69-85 record, five back of the Giants for third place. While the team has some exciting young talent such as Fernando Tatis Jr., Luis Urias, and Chris Paddack, and has Manny Machado locked up for nine more seasons, they have failed to show the consistency needed to compete this year.
This move comes as a bit of a surprise considering the Padres have only eight regular season games remaining, and despite their underperformance, they have one of the best farm systems in baseball. However, the team has not made the playoffs since 2006, so they appear to be trying to shake things up after yet another losing season. Despite this extended playoff drought though, the Padres do appear to have a bright future ahead of them; it will just have to be without Andy Green.
