Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that Joe Maddon is closing in on a deal to become the Los Angeles Angels’ new manager for the 2020 season.

Maddon, 65, was not brought back by the Chicago Cubs after his contract expired at the end of this past season with the team missing the playoffs for the first time since 2014 with an 84-78 record.

The former Tampa Bay Rays’ manager reportedly wanted to manage on the west coast. The Angels’ job became vacant upon the firing of Brad Ausmus, which paved the way for Maddon to rejoin the organization he spent 30 years with as a player and coach combined.
