Per a report from Todd Zolecki of MLB.com, Phillies starter Jake Arrieta will be undergoing a season-ending surgery later this month to remove a bone spur in his right elbow.

Arrieta has underwhelmed since putting on a Phillies uniform, posting a 3.96 ERA last year and 4.64 ERA this year. While he has at least been a durable, fairly reliable option up until this point, his numbers have still been a far cry from his Cy Young days with the Cubs.

Arrieta had reportedly been pitching through the injury since early in the summer, so this announcement doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. Regardless of his dwindling performance, it will still be a tough hit on a Phillies rotation which doesn’t have a whole lot behind their ace Aaron Nola.

Arrieta, who signed a three-year, $75 million deal in 2018, is expected to return to full health by Spring Training of 2020, when he will be entering the last year of his deal at age 34.
