According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, left-handed starter Madison Bumgarner has signed a five-year contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic confirmed it’s an $85 million deal ($17 million AAV) with $15 million deferred.

Bumgarner, 30, made an MLB-leading 34 starts for the San Francisco Giants in 2019 — his 11th season with the club — pitching to a 3.90 ERA (3.90 FIP) with 203 strikeouts, 43 walks, 1.13 WHIP, a 120 ERA+, and 3.2 wins above replacement (FanGraphs).

The North Carolina native pitched to a 2.99 ERA from his debut in 2009 through 2016, being named to four National League All-Star teams and contributing heavily to the Giants’ three World Series wins over that span (2.11 ERA over 102.1 postseason innings; 14 starts, two relief appearances).

The southpaw battled injuries throughout the 2017 and 2018 seasons (ribs, shoulder, broken finger), but clearly reinforced his value last year, as evidenced by his newly-minted long-term contract.

Bumgarner currently figures to slot into the top spot in Arizona’s rotation, ahead of fellow lefties Robbie Ray and Alex Young, and righties Merrill Kelly, Luke Weaver, Mike Leake, and Zac Gallen.
