According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, free-agent catcher Jason Castro and the Los Angeles Angels “are in agreement” on a one-year, $6.85 million pact, pending medical evaluations, per sources.

Castro, 32, hit .232/.332/.435 with 13 home runs, 30 RBIs, nine doubles, and 88 strikeouts over 275 plate appearances with Minnesota last season with -7 defensive runs saved and 3.2 framing runs above average (FanGraphs) over 631.1 innings behind the plate.

From 2014, his fourth season in Houston, through 2018, the Castro Valley, CA product accumulated 29 DRS with annual FRM metrics of 5.8, 9.1, 16.1, 4.9, and 1.9, respectively.

A career .231/.313/.390 hitter (93 OPS+), Castro’s value obviously lies in his defense. Between Shohei Ohtani (if he’s healthy), Julio Teheran, Dylan Bundy, Andrew Heaney, and Hansel Robles, there’s plenty of potential to be realized throughout Los Angeles’ rotation and bullpen.

We’ll keep you posted with any new information as it becomes available.
