The New York Mets front office may be taking shape sooner rather than later, as reports indicate that there is a leading candidate to take over as the new president of baseball operations.

MLB insider Jon Paul Morosi reported on Wednesday that Cleveland Indians GM Mike Chernoff is now viewed as the leading candidate to take the position.

Just yesterday, Morosi reported that the Mets had requested to interview Chernoff. Now it appears that the Mets have been granted permission by the Indians to conduct said interview. Chernoff is a New Jersey native, so taking this opportunity with the Mets would be a homecoming of sorts. All while being able to head up the baseball operations for a team with unlimited resources.

Conversations between the Mets and Indians are ongoing and are likely expected to extend past their search for a new executive.

Morosi indicates in his report that New York may be looking to nab both Cleveland’s GM and their shortstop, with Chernoff and Francisco Lindor potentially joining the Mets over the coming weeks.

Along with Chernoff, Morosi has also reported that Tampa Bay Rays executive Bobby Heck is a potential candidate to become the Mets new GM, where he would be receiving a promotion in title from his role in Tampa.

If Sandy Alderson were to ultimately go this route and hire Chernoff as the new president of baseball operations, with Heck serving under him as the GM, the Mets would have succeeded in bringing some of the best baseball minds in the game to run their front office.
