I have no idea what Ken Rosenthal was talking about earlier, but according to the Mets Michael Cuddyer feels great and could begin playing in rehab games next week.

As the Mets continue to explore outfield options, I couldn’t help noticing something that Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports just reported.

Rosenthal basically said that the team has some concerns that outfielder Michael Cuddyer “may not be back.”

I thought that was kind of odd because I remember reading just a few days ago that the Mets expected Cuddyer to be activated as soon as he becomes eligible. That to me would suggest that he’s made great progress on his ailing knee.

There’s been no new reports from Sandy Alderson or Terry Collins regarding Cuddyer, so there’s no telling if there’s a new development that has yet to be reported.

Before Cuddyer landed on the DL, Alderson lamented that his $21 million dollar acquisition had been forced into a role that he was not expected to play this season and that it took a toll on him.

“He is someone who has played quite a bit more than we anticipated he would have because of David’s absence and some other injuries we have had. Hopefully that will sort itself out in the second half.”

On the day before he was placed on the DL, Cuddyer said “I don’t know if I’m confident enough to play a full nine innings yet, that is the issue.”

The next day he was placed on the disabled list and the Mets promoted their top hitting prospect Michael Conforto, who is 0-for-his-last-15 and batting .211 in his first six games.

A former batting champion, Cuddyer is batting .250 with a .303 OBP and .683 OPS in 314 plate appearances this season.
