Jerry Manuel has no problem with Ryan Church, in fact he really likes the guy according to this report. The Kranepool Society calls it head games. Whatever the deal is between these two guys, I hope it’s water under the bridge now.
Jose Reyes made his long awaited appearance as shortstop (okay, it was five games), despite an MRI taken on Monday that still showed swelling in his right knee. I thought it was kind of strange because the Mets had been reporting it was a sore calf. Regardless, it was good to see Reyes again and it gave me a sense of normalcy going into last nights action.
Speaking of last night, the Mets committed their sixth error of the series when Daniel Murphy took his eye off the ball and transformed a Juan Pierre out into a double which scored two batters later. Don’t look now, but Murphy is batting .115 in his last ten games. The more we keep hearing that Murphy will play first base, the more he continues to play left field. What’s up with that Jerry?
If defense was not going to be top priority in leftfield anyway, someone remind me again why we didn’t sign Adam Dunn (.287 – 12 HR – 32 RBI) for two years at a discounted rate? And the thing about Dunn’s homeruns is that they would be homeruns in Citi Field, the Grand Canyon, and the Jacob Javits Center.
Last night’s loss was the Mets third in a row, and Promote the Curse reminds us that during that stretch the Mets are batting .220, and have hit zero homeruns. Yikes! The whole thing has got Mets Grrl speechless.
According to Ken Davidoff of Newsday, one of the questions he gets very frequently is; “How much longer before (manager) or (general manager) loses his job?” Hmm, it’s a little bit premature for that kind of talk in my opinion, but as most of you know, I can be easily swayed. That said, I think Minaya should be on the hot seat more-so than Manuel. Reasons why? How about this one, oh and this one too.
Hey, it’s not all bad… the Sporting News just named their Top 50 in baseball, and the Mets fared pretty well with Johan Santana #3, David Wright #9, Jose Reyes #11, and Carlos Beltran #19. Geez… All that talent and the Mets are still the punchline in a bad joke I heard yesterday. Q – What has 18 arms and legs and can catch flies? A – Not the Mets
Maybe there’s help on the horizon in the minors? The Subway Squawkers reminds us that our last three minor league callups have been a little long in the tooth. They would include 40-year old rookie Ken Takahashi and 36-year old Ramon Martinez. But as Yoda said to Obi-Wan Kenobi, there is another. Fernando Martinez had a Ruthian day against Clay Buchholz (yes, the guy who threw the no-hitter).
Adam Rubin is one of my favorite Mets beat writers, and he’s always having these great contests on his blog. Go there and try to win a free copy of Forever Blue. Regarding Carlos Delgado’ surgery and the possibility of losing him for more than two months, Michael Ganci of the Wright Stache wonders if Nick Johnson is worth the investment. Aubrey Huff might also be worth a look. Andrew Mees of Mets Examiner doesn’t see an easy solution for replacing Delgado, and I have to agree.
