We will not see Peter Alonso in blue and orange this season.

According to Mets’ co-general manager John Ricco, the Mets will not promote first base prospect Peter Alonso in 2018.

“To have Pete come up and really just sit didn’t make a lot of sense,” Ricco said.

“As much as we’d love to reward him for the season he had and the work he’s done, we think it’s more beneficial for him to get some rest and see what the fall plan for him will be.”

“Right now the decision is that he will not be coming up. And he has been told that.”

In response to the news, Alonso’s agents Adam Karon and Tripper Johnson issued the following statement:

“It is disheartening for Peter after delivering a historically great season and exceeding every request from the Mets player development staff. I am sure it is equally disheartening for Mets fans who would enjoy watching and getting to know one of the most talented and entertaining players they’ve developed in years.”

Alonso, 23, has clubbed 33 homers and driven in 111 runs while hitting at a .277/.393/.560 clip between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Las Vegas this year.

He did not take the news well:

“I’m not going to lie, it’s really disheartening and disappointing, because one of the things that people tell you is as long as you are successful, you’re going to be in the big leagues,” Alonso told Anthony DiComo.

“It’s just one of those things where I understand it’s an organizational decision, and at the end of the day, I have to respect that. But it’s really disheartening because I feel like I’ve performed, and am deserving of a reward. At the end of the day when you look up, it’s like, what else can you do? I guess the answer is nothing.”

An issue, manager Mickey Callaway has alluded to, has been Alonso’s struggles defensively.

“It’s not just about swinging the bat here,” Callaway said. “It’s about defense as well. We want to make sure he’s in a good spot in his overall game and the things we’re going to value in this organization moving forward.”

However, it’s been widely reported that Alonso has made great strides defensively, and was in fact named Defensive Player of the Month in July.

Fellow first base prospect Dominic Smith will probably receive a September call-up in coming days, and could see time there and in the outfield.
