Mickey Callaway told reporters this afternoon that the Mets will be watching how they use relievers Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman the rest of the season.
“We are really trying to be mindful of the innings Gsellman and Lugo have at this point, so we’re going to put some rules for ourselves as far as usage of those guys moving forward,” Callaway said.
Callaway added that some of the younger guys, specifically Drew Smith and Bobby Wahl, are expected to get some shots in later innings.
Looking ahead to next season, Callaway noted that however Seth Lugo is used the rest of the season, he is expected to come into camp as a starter.
Both Lugo and Gsellman have been key pieces in the Mets bullpen this season. Gsellman has a record of 6-2, and has posted a 4.02 ERA in 62.2 innings in relief. Lugo has a 2.87 ERA and 78 strikeouts over 78.1 innings.
