David Lennon of Newsday tweeted that the Mets will wait to retire Piazza’s No. 31 until he is selected to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

Lennon also speculates that Piazza will get selected on the first ballot, and that he will go into the Hall wearing a Mets cap.

ESPN’s Adam Rubin disagrees that Piazza will get voted in on the first ballot and doesn’t believe he’ll have the necessary 75 percent of the votes needed. But he does agree that Piazza will eventually go in as a Met.

I think Rubin’s wrong. Piazza is a no-doubt-about-it first ballot Hall of Famer in my book.
