Game Notes

  • The Mets rallied from a six-run deficit to tie the score in the ninth when David Wright scored from first base on Daniel Murphy’s single against Jonathan Papelbon. But Carlos Torres surrendered a walk-off homer to Kevin Frandsen to open the bottom half and the Phillies beat the Mets, 8-7. Dillon Gee surrendered a pair of homers to Ryan Howard, who now has six long balls in 15 career at-bats against Gee.
  • A year after Valdespin burst onto the major league stage with a tie-breaking pinch-hit homer against Jonathan Papelbon for his first major league homer, JV1 again homered in the ninth inning against the closer. This time, the one-out solo shot pulled the Mets within 7-6.
  • Lucas Duda has been placed on the 15-day DL with a left intercostal strain. The Mets ave recalled Zach Lutz from Triple-A Las Vegas to replace him on the roster. Lutz, 27, was batting .286 with 11 doubles, seven home runs and 37 RBI in 53 games for Las Vegas this season.
  • In his last start at Atlanta, Matt Harvey took a no-hitter into the seventh inning for the third time this season. Only three other pitchers during the expansion era held an opposing team hitless through 6.0 innings three times in the first 25 starts of their career: Al Downing, Jose DeLeon (four times), and Kent Mercker.
  • Matt Harvey is fourth in the majors with a 2.16 ERA. He leads the National League with 115 strikeouts and is tied for first in the NL with a .193 batting average against. Harvey is second in the majors with 0.91 WHIP.
  • Right-hander Noah Syndergaard, the highly regarded pitching prospect obtained in the trade for R.A. Dickey, has been promoted to Double-A Binghamton. Syndergaard, 20, went 3-3 with a 3.11 ERA in 12 starts for Class A St. Lucie. He has allowed 61 hits and 16 walks while striking out 64 in 63 2/3 innings.

Game Preview

Happy Matt Harvey Day!

The Mets look to bounce back today against the Phillies in the rubber game against the Phillies. Yesterday Dillon Gee‘s brain block against the Phillies continued as he put the Mets in a hole to start. Some how, the Mets made a come back and eventually almost beat the Phillies but lost 8-7. Hopefully Matt Harvey can lead the way against John Lannan.

Matt Harvey is 6-1 with 15 starts over 104.0 innings while posting a 2.16 ERA. He is leading the league in strikeouts with 115. He has been a bit more human in the month of June as he has posted a 3.12 ERA over 4 starts but has struck out 31 batters over 26.0 innings. He made one start against Philly this year where he pitched 7.0 innings allowing one run and striking out 9. The Phillies have the following numbers against Harvey:

Howard 0-7
Rollins 3-8, 2 2B
Utley 2-8
Nix 1-5
Brown 0-5

The Mets bats get a crack at John Lannan today who is 0-1 over 4 starts and 19.2 innings while posting a 5.49 ERA. Lannan has spent his career with the Nationals, but finds himself on the Phillies this year.  He faced the Mets once last year where shut the Mets out 5.2 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against John:

Wright 10-32, 3 2B
Buck 3-9
Murphy 2-7
Byrd 2-5, 2B
Young 1-3

Lets Go Mets!
