The day-night sweep was not to be for the New York Mets (27-15), who dropped the second game of their Saturday doubleheader 11-3 against the Colorado Rockies (19-20). The Rockies broke the game wide open in the bottom of the sixth inning, putting what was at one point a very close contest completely out of reach.

The Mets got hits from three of their first four batters against Ty Blach, who was making his first start since the 2019 season. Unfortunately, Brandon Nimmo was thrown out at second trying to stretch his hit into a double, and Mark Canha stranded two runners on base to end the threat.

The Rockies were much more clinical with their first inning chance. C.J. Cron launched a two-run homer off Trevor Williams to give the Rockies an early 2-0 lead.

The Mets responded quickly, mounting a rally in the top of the second inning. Tomás Nido drove in the team’s first run of the game with an RBI single off the glove of Brendan Rodgers. Nimmo followed that up with a sacrifice fly to tie the game up at two.

Not content with a tie score, the Rockies hit another two-run blast in the bottom of the second inning to go up 4-2. This one coming from rookie catcher Brian Serven. It was Serven’s first big league hit, and it came at the expense of his fellow Arizona State Sun Devil Trevor Williams.

Both offenses were held in check over the course of the next three innings by impressive pitching performances. The Rockies brought on Ashton Goudeau in the fourth inning to relieve Blach, and he did not give up a hit in either of his first two innings. Meanwhile, Williams settled down to retire the final seven batters he faced after the Serven home run. Adonis Medina entered in the fifth and promptly loaded the bases with two outs, but he induced a lineout from Ryan McMahon to avoid any real damage.

The Mets finally got to Goudeau in the top of the sixth. J.D. Davis lined an RBI single that caromed off Goudeau’s glove to cut the lead to 4-3. Davis ran the Mets out of the inning by getting thrown out attempting to steal second base.

The disastrous inning that was telegraphed by Medina in the fifth reared its ugly head in the bottom of the sixth. Medina gave up hits to five of the six batters he faced in the frame. This included a RBI double to Sam Hilliard, as well as Serven’s second two-run homer of the game. It was Medina’s first poor outing as a member of the Mets, as he has otherwise been very valuable as the 27th man during doubleheaders.

Chasen Shreve was brought on to finish the inning but did not fare any better. He surrendered three consecutive RBI singles with two outs. The Rockies brought 12 batters to the plate in the sixth, scored seven runs, and led 11-3 when all was said and done.

Jake Reed and Joely Rodríguez put up some much-needed zeroes, but so did the arms out of the Rockies bullpen, bringing about a merciful end to this one. The Mets have yet to drop both games of a doubleheader this season, but they have also failed to sweep each of their past three.

Player of the Game: Brandon Nimmo

There weren’t many positives to take away from the Mets’ offensive performance, but Brandon Nimmo continues to be the catalyst for just about everything New York does. He led off the game with a single, tied it at 2-2 on a sacrifice fly in the second inning, and was the only Met to record a hit after the sixth inning. His season average is creeping its way towards .300 and his .394 OBP is exactly what this team needs from their lead-off hitter.

On Deck

The Mets will wrap up their three-game set against the Rockies at Coors Field on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 3:10 P.M. ET, and the game will be broadcast on PIX11. The Mets will have Taijuan Walker on the mound, while the Rockies will run out Austin Gomber.
