Jon Heyman of SI.com just said on SNY that he believes that the Mets have turned down an offer from the Indians for All Star catcher Victor Martinez.

The 30 year old Martinez, has been rumored to be on the trading block all month and if this is true I would be very interested in knowing why and who the other players in the deal were.

I’m actually quite surprised that Omar would turn down the opportunity to acquire such a major talent that would be under the teams control through the 2011 season.

Before the game, while Omar was offering his apology to a gathering of reporters, Minaya said,

“I’ve been talking to teams. I turned down a couple of trades yesterday. Believe it or not, we had some pretty big names that were presented. I’ve been talking to teams; and just before I got up here I had my assistant call a club.”

Victor Martinez is having a great season, and I do hope they are still negotiating for him. Here are his stats:

2009 Season Stats
SPLITS G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS
Season 99 377 56 107 21 1 15 67 51 51 0 0 .284 .368 .464 .832
Career 821 3035 413 900 191 2 103 518 347 407 1 3 .297 .369 .463 .832
Last 7 days 6 23 1 4 0 0 1 6 4 4 0 0 .174 .321 .304 .626
Projected 159 605 90 172 34 2 24 108 82 82 0 0 .284 .368 .464 .832

Look at that OBP and OPS… And he’s a career .297 hitter.

6:55 UPDATE: I spoke to a reliable source who believes that Brad Holt was in the deal, and he believes that Wilmer Flores was the second player in the deal, but that it could be Jenrry Mejia. Either way, I’m jumping on this.

7:00 UPDATE: I spoke to someone who works for the Yankees and he tells me that Jenrry Mejia was the key player in the deal.
