kirk nieuwenhuis

Assistant general manager John Ricco said the New York Mets “are doing their due diligence” to see if a trade option exists before trying to pass outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis through waivers. (Adam Rubin, ESPN New York)

Nieuwenhuis, 27, was batting .079 (3 for 38) with a .257 OPS this season before he was designated for assignment on Tuesday.

In parts of four seasons with the Mets, Nieuwenhuis has a slash line of .230/.302/.374 in 592 plate appearances.

It’s great to hear the Mets are on the phones trying to execute a trade for him, but I’m not sure there’s any value here.

I could see a team trying to claim him on waivers, but I don’t see a team wanting to give up one of their players to get him.
