The New York Mets today announced that they have traded infielder Omar Quintanilla to the Baltimore Orioles for cash considerations.
Quintanilla, 30, hit .257 (18-70) with one home run and four RBI in 29 games with the Mets. He was designated for assignment on July 17.
The 5-9, 185-pounder has hit .218 (129-592) with 30 doubles, three home runs and 38 RBI in 256 major league games with Colorado, Texas and New York.
Quintanilla also hit .282 (44-156) with 11 doubles, two triples, six home runs and 27 RBI in 48 games this year with Buffalo (AAA) of the International League.
Rubin says that Mets officials had been concerned they would lose Quintanilla off waivers if they tried to pass him through to send him to Triple-A Buffalo, so they DFA’d him to buy time and now have dealt him to Baltimore.
