The Mets (51-61) took home a 11-2 win in a rain-shortened game against the Cubs (58-55) on Monday evening at Citi Field. The win was backed by strong pitching from the Mets’ newfound ace Kodai Senga, who tossed 85 pitches in allowing just two runs through six innings.

Pete Alonso carried New York to victory on Monday evening, driving in six of the Mets’ 11 runs scored. The first baseman knocked a three-run homer in the first inning to give New York a 3-0 lead, driving in Francisco Alvarez who reached via a walk and Francisco Lindor who singled. In the third, another Lindor single set up a second, two-run homer for Alonso—marking the fourth time this year and 18th time in his career that he has hit two home runs in a game. He knocked in his sixth run of the game in the bottom of the eighth on a single.

With 33, Alonso ranks third in MLB in homers behind Shohei Ohtani (40) and Matt Olson (39). As Alonso continues to mash, he also cements his spot in the Mets’ record books. He is now sits at fifth on the Mets all-time home run leaders list with 179, and is third in two-home run games behind Darryl Strawberry (22) and David Wright (21).

New York picked up two more runs in the sixth. The club loaded the bases with singles from Jeff McNeil, Danny Mendick, and Rafael Ortega. Jonathan Arauz was walked, and Brandon Nimmo grounded into a double play to each drive in a run for a final 7-2 lead.

After an over two-hour rain delay, the Mets knocked in four more to make sure the game was sealed. Brooks Raley, Drew Smith and Jimmy Yacabonis combined for three scoreless innings to lock down Senga’s win.

Senga tossed six quality innings on Monday, allowing just two runs on seven hits with two walks, and six strikeouts. Senga allowed a run in the third after Chicago’s Nick Madrigal and Mike Tauchman both notched singles with no outs, but struck out two and got out of the jam limiting the damage. He allowed another run in the fifth on three straight two-out singles. Senga’s night ended after he exited just before the game entered the rain delay.

Carlos Carrasco (3-6, 6.60 ERA) takes the mound on Tuesday for New York. In his last time out, he tossed six innings and allowed six runs on eight hits, with a walk against the Royals.

Jameson Taillon (6-6, 5.36 ERA) gets the start for the Cubs. The right-hander last faced the Reds and earned the win after he threw five innings, allowed two runs on seven hits, and recorded five strikeouts with two walks.
