The New York Mets announced on Tuesday evening that they have pushed back the unveiling of the statue honoring the great Tom Seaver until Opening Day of 2022.

The dedication was originally scheduled to take place on July 22 outside of Citi Field, but Team President Sandy Alderson said that due to delays related to the pandemic the artist asked for additional time to complete his work.

“We are excited to unveil this one-of-a-kind tribute to Tom, but it has to be right.. After conferring with the Seaver family, we made the decision to unveil the statue on Opening Day 2022,” Alderson said in a statement released by the team.

We are excited to celebrate the unveiling with more fans at Citi Field in 2022, and know that Tom would be proud,” the Seaver family added. This certainly seems like the right move by the Mets, as it will likely allow more fans to be in attendance for the dedication.

Seaver passed away last August 31st due to health complications, including dementia. The team is honoring him by wearing No. 41 patches on their uniforms during the 2021 season.
