The New York Mets have released their rotation coming out of the All Star break, reports ESPN’s Adam Rubin.
On Friday, the Mets will have Bartolo Colon on the mound to kick the second half off against Jeremy Hellickson and the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. In 98.2 innings, the surprising 43-year old All Star has pitched to the tune of a 3.28 ERA over 17 starts.
Following Colon will be Logan Verrett, who the Mets tabbed to occupy Matt Harvey‘s vacant spot in the rotation for the foreseeable future. Look for the righty from Baylor to make an impression as he builds a case to fill Harvey’s void in the long term.
Jacob deGrom will pitch Sunday’s finale against the Phillies. Despite a consistent lack of run support this season, deGrom has won his past two starts. With a juicy matchup against the struggling Phillies, he’ll be poised for a third straight victory if the Mets can muster some offense behind him. It’s also worth noting that during his last start in Miami, deGrom flashed his plus fastball for what seemed like the first time this season, routinely touching 95 miles per hour while holding the Marlins to just two runs over seven strong innings.
Steven Matz will open the series against the Cubs in Chicago on Monday. Winless in his last eight starts, the southpaw will look to rebound coming out of the break after suffering two hard luck losses to the Marlins and the Nationals. Despite pitching with a bone spur in his elbow for much of the season, Matz has logged a respectable 3.38 ERA while striking out 8.4 batters per nine innings.
And rounding out the first turn of the rotation is the Mets’ current ace Noah Syndergaard. At the end of the season’s first half, the first time All Star led Mets starters with nine wins, a 2.56 ERA, and a dazzling 10.9 strikeout rate. The Mets decided to push back Syndergaard’s start due to a routine dead arm phase. As of now, the team reports that Syndergaard’s arm issues are no cause for alarm.
