After losing the series opener to Marlins on Friday, the Mets looked to get back on track on Saturday. David Peterson got the ball for his third career start, this time against Miami’s against Daniel Castano

The Mets were looking to get their offense back on the right foot after scoring three runs in each of their previous three games. They did just that, showcasing the power they have in the middle of their order.

In his previous two starts, Peterson gave the Mets exactly what they needed, lasting five and two-third innings and giving up two earned runs in both. He was able to get through five innings again on Saturday, continuing to prove he is a valuable arm on the Mets’ roster.

Pitching

David Peterson found himself down in the game early, giving up an RBI single to Brian Anderson in the first inning. He settled down quickly after however, not giving up another run until the fifth, when Logan Forsythe hit a solo home run.

Jeurys Familia relieved Peterson in the sixth and did not have his best performance. Familia lasted just two-thirds of the inning, leaving the bases loaded and two outs for Drew SmithSmith gave up a two-run single to Monte Harrisonboth runs being charged to Familia. Smith would escape the inning with a strikeout.

Robert Gsellman took over for Smith in seventh inning and did not disappoint. Making his first appearance after being activated from the Injured List, Gsellman collected two strikeouts in the inning, giving up just a single.

Seth Lugo got the ball in the eighth inning and continued to show why he is the most trusted arm in the Mets bullpen. Lugo retired all three batters he faced, collecting a strikeout.

Offense

The Mets offense put on a clinic throughout the entirety of Saturday’s contest, scoring eight runs on seven hits.

Michael Conforto kickstarted the offense in the second inning, lacing a two-run home run to give the Mets a 2-1 lead.

Pete Alonso followed Conforto’s lead, hitting a two-run homer of his own in the third inning, expanding the Mets lead to 4-1.

In the fifth inning, J.D. Davis drove in a run of his own with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Amed Rosario, giving the Mets a 5-2 lead.

Davis decided a sacrifice fly was not enough for his stat line on the evening, hitting a three-run home run in the seventh, expanding the Mets’ lead to four.

Justin Wilson came in to close out the win for the Mets in the ninth inning. After giving up back to back two-out singles, Wilson put an end to the game by striking out Corey Dickerson.

On Deck
