The Mets have made their first undrafted free agent signing with Brandon McIlwain, an outfielder out of the University of California, Berkeley.

Interestingly, McIlwain played football for Cal and threw for two touchdowns while running for four in 2018, and was also drafted by the Marlins in the 26th round of the 2019 draft.

Here’s some video of McIlwain playing football against BYU:

McIlwain played baseball for South Carolina in 2016 and 2017, but hardly played as he only had ten plate appearances.

In his return to baseball in 2019, he hit .258/.309/.435 in 20 games. He struggled a bit more this year despite drawing a few more walks, posting a .200/.333/.273 line in 16 games.

The Mets also agreed to a deal with their third round pick Anthony Walters, who signed for $20K with his pick value at 91 being $647,300. Walters, a redshirt junior from San Diego State, has been said to have good hands at shortstop and some sneaky pop, profiling as a potentially valuable utility guy.
