Lindsay Desmond

The New York Mets announced they have signed their top two selections in the 2015 MLB Draft; OF Desmond Lindsay and LHP Max Wotel.

Lindsay, 18, was selected in the second round, No. 53 overall, and hails from the Out Of Door Academy in Bradenton, Florida. At 6’0 and 200 pounds, Lindsay is a right-handed power prospect with some speed who projects as a first baseman, centerfielder and corner outfielder.

Paul DePodesta called Lindsay a first round talent.

“We felt like it was an opportunity for us in a year we don’t have a first round pick, to maybe reach up and try to get a first round talent.”

“Without the hamstring injury this spring, we don’t think there would be any way that he would have lasted until the 53rd pick in this draft,” DePodesta said.

Wotell was selected with the No. 88 overall pick in the third round of the MLB Amateur Draft.

The 2015 Gatorade State Baseball Player of the Year had a dominating season for Marvin Ridge High School in North Carolina.

The 6-foot-3 southpaw was undefeated with an 11-0 record and a 0.54 ERA, recording 120 strikeouts in 65.1 innings pitched.

The top draftee who was already signed, Thomas Szapucki is one of two high school left-handed pitchers that the Mets selected among their first four picks. He’s ranked 97th on MLB’s Top 200 Draft Prospects Board. Tanous described Szapucki as “a lefty with incredible, really good arm strength and stuff.”
