Drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 21st round of the 2016 MLB Draft, Kohlwey played parts of seven seasons in the minor leagues before making his MLB debut in 2023. A left-handed hitter and thrower, he went 2-for-13 at the plate with five strikeouts in about a week in the show before being sent back down to Triple-A.

Over what was basically a full Triple-A season in 2023, Kohlwey hit .276/.390/.437, a .827 OPS, with 12 home runs and 29 doubles. It marked the fourth straight year Kohlwey finished the season with an OPS of at least .800. Over his Triple-A career, he is a .296/.387/.444 career hitter with strong walk rates and not overwhelming strikeout numbers.

While primarily a corner outfielder, Kohlwey has experience at all three outfield spots, including over 600 career innings in center field. He also has over 600 career innings at first base.
