The New York Mets inked outfielder Daniel Palka and right-handed pitcher Kevin Gadea to minor league deals. Both players have been assigned to the Syracuse Mets roster.

Palka, 30, played last season with the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals. In 106 games, Palka hit .256/.364/.472 with 19 doubles, two triples, 18 homers, and 58 RBI.

He played 154 games between the 2018 and 2019 seasons for the Chicago White Sox. He hit .218/.277/.433 with 15 doubles, three triples, 29 homers, and 71 RBI including 27 home runs during the 2018 season.

Gadea, 27, pitched in the New York Yankees farm system in 2021.

Between Double-A and Triple-A, he made 28 relief appearances going 2-1 with a 2.61 ERA, one save, a 1.258 WHIP, 5.0 BB/9, and a 12.6 K/9.

It was Gadea’s first action since 2016. He had missed four years due to Tommy John and COVID-19. As noted in NJ.com by Yankees minor league pitching instructor Daniel Moskos:

He’s been throwing 90-to-93, so his velo is not bad. And it’s still early [May 2021]. His veto has been on an upward trajectory since spring, so that’s definitely encouraging. For some of those guys who used to be able to overpower guys, they just did it with the fastball, and so sometimes the secondary stuff could be lacking. I’m not saying that Kevin’s was lacking, but he definitely relied heavily on his fastball in the past. So now he’s learning to use his changeup and curveball to be able to create a nice little mix to keep guys off balance.

As a reminder, with the lockout, teams can only sign qualifying players to minor league deals.
