The Mets continued to mine the undrafted free agent market on Monday, coming to an agreement with outfielder Joe Suozzi from Boston College.

The 22-year-old has connections to the Mets in more ways than one.

Suozzi is no stranger to New York City. He grew up in Glen Cove, Long Island, and attended Chaminade High School in Mineola, where he was the MVP of the 2013 CHSAA title-winning team.

Suozzi was in the midst of a breakout year for the Eagles, hitting .414 with a 1.109 OPS in 15 games before COVID-19 canceled the remainder of the college baseball season. Over two previous seasons, he hit .272 with four home runs. D1Baseball.com ranked him as the 65th-best available outfielder in this year’s draft.

Suozzi is also the son of Thomas Suozzi (D-NY), a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York’s third district, which covers parts of Long Island and Queens but not the area surrounding Citi Field.

Still, both Fred and Jeff Wilpon made contributions in excess of $1,000 to Rep. Suozzi’s campaign in 2016, according to public records from the Federal Election Commission.

It would be incorrect to assume that Suozzi simply signed with the Mets because of his father, as he likely would have been selected in the middle rounds of a normal 40-round draft.

Suozzi came to Boston College without a scholarship and did not play his freshman year. The following summer, he joined a slow-pitch softball team on Long Island, before returning to campus and walking onto the baseball team in the fall of 2017. He was elected as a team co-captain this spring.

Suozzi also spent a summer in the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League, which has produced recent Mets draft picks Phil Capra, Josh Walker, Gavin Garay, and Dan Rizzie.

The Mets have signed four undrafted free agents since the period opened on Sunday, also picking up Cal Berkeley two-sport star Brandon McIlwain, South Alabama RHP Drake Nightengale, and Central Oklahoma (DII) RHP Dylan Hall.
