The New York Mets made two more depth adds to their pitching staff on Friday.

Mark Feinsand of MLB reports the Mets have claimed right-hander Max Kranick off waivers from the Pirates. Coming off Tommy John surgery, Kranick didn’t pitch in the majors last season and only pitched in nine minor league games. He posted a 2.76 ERA in 16 1/3 innings for Triple-A Indianapolis in seven starts.

In 2022, Kranick tossed five scoreless innings for the Pirates with an average fastball velocity of up to 95.1 mph (up from 94.2 mph in 2021). In 2021, working exclusively as a starter for the Pirates, Kranick posted a 6.28 ERA in 38 2/3 innings.

The Mets have designated outfielder/catcher Cooper Hummel for assignment to make room for Kranick on the 40-man roster.

Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors reports that the New York Mets have signed lefty reliever Danny Young to a minor league deal with an invitation to major league camp. Young would make $825K if in the big leagues.

Young, 29, allowed only one run in 8 1/3 innings for the Braves last season over eight appearances. He struck out 11 and walked only two during that span. Young required hip surgery that ended his 2023 season in June.

For his career, Young has a 2.45 ERA and a 48.8% ground-ball rate in 14 2/3 big league innings between the Braves and the Seattle Mariners. In Triple-A, Young has a 4.70 ERA and 11.4 K/9 in 113 innings over parts of four seasons.

Young uses a sinker at 89 mph and a slider at 77 mph from a tough angle to get hitters out. Young was a college teammate of Pete Alonso and Harrison Bader at Florida.

The former eighth round pick joins a long list of pitchers David Syearns has added this offseason to hopefully find a few diamonds in the rough to fill out a bullpen during the 2024 season for the Mets.
