Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports the Mets have signed veteran catcher Gary Sánchez to a minor league deal. He will be assigned to Triple-A Syracuse.

Sánchez, 30, recently opted-out of his minor league deal with the Giants. The former Yankee was hitting .164/.319/.182 with zero home runs in 16 games this season in Triple-A for the Giants. Defensively, Sánchez was average last season right at 0 catcher runs. He was in the 50th percentile for framing, -2 runs blocking, and +2 runs throwing runners out.

The former All-Star hit .205/.282/.377 with 24 doubles, 16 home runs, and 61 RBIs last season in 128 games with the Twins. Despite the poor 88 OPS+ last season, Sánchez continued to hit the ball hard. He was in the 97th percentile for max exit velocity, 92nd percentile for hard hit percentage, and 92nd percentile in barrels.

His best season came in 2017 when he hit 33 home runs, posted a 126 OPS+, was an All-Star, won the Silver Slugger Award, and got a couple of down-ballot MVP votes.
