The Mets finished Wednesday night’s doubleheader down in the dumps in a 3-0 loss against the Marlins as their offense could not produce yet again. Seth Lugo started the night strong going three scoreless innings. The runs that were allowed were as a result of Jared Hughes giving up a pair on a double and Jeurys Familia  watching the third run score as Jon Berti scampered around the bases.

The Mets offense was painfully ineffective all evening as they were shut out for the second time of the night, only getting four hits, none of which amounted to anything.

Pitching

Seth Lugo took the mound for his first start in over two years and showed that he has what it takes to perform at the highest level. Lugo started the game with a leadoff strikeout of Jon Berti, then retiring the rest of the side quickly with a fly out from Jesus Aguilar and a ground out from Corey Dickerson

Going into the second with only nine pitches Lugo was in a good position with Luis Rojas not wanting to stretch him too thin. He began the frame by striking out both Brian Anderson and Lewin Diaz.

Lugo made it out of the second unscathed as well with Jonathan Villar grounding out to Amed Rosario who gunned the ball to Dominic Smith for the last out.

Lugo finished his outing after the third inning when he struck out Jesus Sanchez and Brian Navarreto. Over the three innings, he had a final line of no hits or runs and five strikeouts.

Jared Hughes came in to relieve after the stellar start from Lugo. After a leadoff walk to Berti, Hughes allowed a single to Dickerson with Berti hustling to third. Hughes then gave up double to Anderson giving the Marlins a 2-0 lead.

After a ground out from Diaz, Chasen Shreve entered the game for the last out, striking out Villar to end the inning.

Shreve retired the side quickly in the fifth with a pair of groundouts and a popout. Jeurys Familia came in for the sixth allowing a leadoff walk to Berti who stole second, third and home to make the score 3-0 Marlins.

After getting the first two outs of the frame, Familia then hit Anderson with a pitch but managed to get the last out on a groundout from Diaz.

Offense

The Mets bats were lifeless yet again in the second game of the night going the entire evening without a run, making it the first time in 45 years where the Mets were shut out in both games of a doubleheader.

After a 1-2-3 first inning, the Mets went into the second with a little more energy with a walk from Jeff McNeil, Rosario then singled with McNeil getting to third. Despite Luis Guillorme being walked, the Mets couldn’t get a runner home.

Going until the fifth without a hit, J.D. Davis singled yet the Mets’ offense couldn’t produce. Smith and Robinson Cano singled in the sixth but had the same outcome: the Mets still scoreless.

The game eventually ended with Davis grounding into a double play and the Mets losing 3-0 against the Marlins with the losing pitcher being Jared Hughes

On Deck

Jacob deGrom (2-0, 1.93 ERA) will take the mound to face Elieser Hernandez (1-0 2.29 ERA) in Wednesday night’s game against the Marlins. Despite the ace feeling a little off in his last start, he had a stellar outing as he usually does.

On Friday, the Mets will face the Yankees in the long-awaited Subway Series, with a doubleheader of seven-inning games on Friday, a single game on Saturday, and another pair of shortened games on Sunday in another doubleheader.

With the struggles that most of the NL East have been facing, the Mets really need to get into gear if they are going to be contenders in this shortened season.
