According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, the Mets are one of the teams showing early interest in veteran catcher Yadier Molina. Heyman notes that the Yankees and Cardinals are showing interest as well, and the potential Hall of Famer is looking for a two-year deal.

Molina, 38, had one of the worst offensive seasons of his career in 2020 when he hit just .262/.303/.359 with two doubles and four home runs in 42 games.

The long-time Cardinal was still strong defensively though, his 2 runs from extra strikes (Baseball Savant’s framing metric) tied him for sixth in baseball. The nine-time Gold Glover limited stolen bases as well, he caught five of 11 would-be basestealers in 2020.

Both owner Steve Cohen and team president Sandy Alderson mentioned the catching position as a big need for the Mets during their Tuesday press conferences.

The Mets currently have Tomas Nido and Ali Sanchez atop their catching depth after declining team option on both Wilson Ramos and Robinson Chirinos.
