According to Jon Heyman of FanCred Sports, the New York Mets have reportedly shown interest — and spoken to — free agent second baseman, Brian Dozier.
“[The] Mets are among [the] teams to have talks regarding [Dozier] lately,” Heyman wrote. “Though, [the] Nats, Rockies, and others seem like more logical fits.”
Dozier, 31, hit .215/.305/.391 with 21 homers, 72 RBI, and 30 doubles in 632 plate appearances split between the Minnesota Twins — with whom he spent the first six-plus seasons of his major-league career with — and the Los Angeles Dodgers last season. After the July trade that sent him to the eventual National League champion Dodgers, Dozier hit just .182/.300/.350 with a 77 OPS+ rating.
From 2014 through 2017, Dozier had 162-game averages of 34 doubles, 32 home runs, 85 RBI, and a .254/.338/.476 slash line (120 OPS+), culminating with his 42-homer, 99 RBI campaign in 2016.
With the newly-acquired Robinson Cano virtually locked into the Mets’ starting job at second, and last year’s rookie sensation Jeff McNeil having proven to be a more-than-viable backup option on both sides of the chalk, Dozier could slide into his secondary position, shortstop, to spell Amed Rosario.
