The Mets announced on Sunday that they’ve released 2B/DH Robinson Canó. The eight-time all-star was designated for assignment this past Monday after struggling to pick-up where he left off during his hot start in spring training. In 41 at-bats across 12 games in 2022, Canó posted a .233 OBP with just eight hits, three RBIs, and one home run. During Canó’s time with the Mets he appeared in 168 games posting a .315 OBP, 24 home runs, 72 RBIs, and scoring 72 runs.

While a reunion with the Yankees seems unlikely, Canó will have suitors thanks to the National League having the designated hitter role this season. In addition to the release, the Mets announced that right-handed pitcher Stephen Nogosek has been called up from Triple-A Syracuse. Also, right-handed pitcher Adonis Medina was optioned to Triple-A.

Medina burst onto the scene Thursday night during the Mets’ historic 9th inning comeback win over the Phillies as he went 2 2/3 scoreless innings. On the season, Medina has appeared in two games and has struck four in 3 2/3 innings of work. He was the 27th man for the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader.

Nogosek has appeared in eight games for the Mets since 2019 and is 0-2 with 11 strikeouts across 9 2/3 innings of work. He has posted a 9.31 ERA and a 6.92 FIP. Nogosek struggled in spring training over 4 1/3 innings pitched with a 4.15 ERA. However, he seems to have gotten things together in Triple-A as he’s posted a 1.69 ERA and 0.65 WHIP while striking out 13 across 10 2/3 IP in seven games.

The Mets acquired Nogosek as part of the 2017 trade with the Red Sox which saw right-handed pitcher Addison Reed head to Boston. Nogosek is the last man standing in that trade, as both relievers Jamie Callahan and Gerson Bautista are both in other organizations. If Nogosek remains on the team past Sunday, the Mets will need him to capsulate some of his Triple-A magic.
