The Mets have promoted catching prospect Francisco Álvarez from Double-A Binghamton to Triple-A Syracuse. Anthony DiComo of MLB was the first to report it was likely going to happen, while Joel Sherman of the New York Post confirmed the news Saturday evening.

Álvarez has been thriving with the Rumble Ponies. Over 66 games, he’s hit .277/.368/.558 with 18 home runs, 16 doubles and 47 RBIs. Last year, he put up a 1.213 OPS in 15 games for Low-A St. Lucie and an .889 OPS in 84 games for High-A Brooklyn.

Álvarez, who’s still just 20 years old, is the Mets’ consensus No. 1 prospect. He’s most known for his otherworldly power and strength. He has a career .931 OPS over 207 minor league games, many of which came as a teenager.

According to Sherman, Álvarez was informed of his promotion Saturday and is likely to report Monday. As Sherman also noted, the Mets have been hesitant to rush the young phenom, but a promotion to Triple-A certainly makes an MLB appearance in 2022 more likely.

Álvarez joins another one of the Mets’ top prospects, Mark Vientos, in the Syracuse Mets’ lineup.
