According to Andy Martino of SNY, former Mets infielder Daniel Murphy has retired from baseball.

Murphy talked to SNY about his retirement, “This is a beautiful game, and I really just feel humbled and blessed that it let me jump on the ride for a little bit.”

Of course, Murphy is best known for his heroics in the 2015 postseason that helped lead the Mets to the World Series. He set a major league record by homering in six straight postseason games and hit seven home runs overall that postseason.

Murphy would leave as a free agent after the postseason run, signing with the Nationals. The 2016 season was a monster one for Murph, he finished second in the NL MVP voting after hitting .347/.390/.595 with 47 doubles, 25 home runs, and 103 RBIs.

He would go on to win his second straight Silver Slugger in 2017 with the Nationals, when he posted a .928 OPS.

In 2018, Murphy hit .299/.336/.454 combined between the Nationals and Cubs. Next stop was the Rockies, where the former postseason hero didn’t fare well. He had an 88 OPS+ in 2019 and then a miserable 54 OPS+ in the shortened 2020 season.

Overall, in his time with the Mets, Murphy was a .288/.331/.424 hitter over seven seasons and 903 games.

The 35-year-old will be remembered for his incredible 2015 postseason, his aggressive baserunning, and the tendency to boot one in the field.
