Things just keep getting worse for the New York Mets. This afternoon the team suffered a huge blow to their bullpen, as according to Steve Gelbs of SNY, the team placed right-hander Seth Lugo on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder tendinitis.

Lugo told reporters including Matt Ehalt of Yahoo Sports this afternoon that this is the first time that he has felt such soreness in a game. “Felt some soreness here and there, normal stuff from pitching, but that was the first time in a game,” he said.

Tim Britton of the Athletic notes that Lugo compared the soreness to what he felt when he missed two weeks during the 2017 season. The righty told the team it was tendinitis, and then an MRI confirmed it.

Much like the 2018 season, Lugo has been a weapon out of the Mets bullpen. He struggled a bit early on in the season, but has picked things up as of late. Prior to yesterday’s outing, Lugo had recorded 13.1 consecutive scoreless innings with 16 strikeouts.

The righty also told reporters that the current plan is to get “a few days rest until symptoms go away and then build up from there.”

In his place, the Mets have shifted Jed Lowrie to the 60-day injured list and selected the contract of lefty Hector Santiago from Triple-A Syracuse. Through eight appearances, seven starts, Santiago is 3-1 with a 3.35 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and 4.8 BB/9.
