The New York Mets announced that they have placed outfielder Juan Lagares on the 15-Day Disabled List, retroactive to June 15, with a sprained left thumb and recalled infielder Ty Kelly from Las Vegas (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League.

Lagares was batting .289 (26-90) with five doubles, one triple, two home runs, six RBI and eight runs scored in 48 games this season for the Mets.

Original Report

Mets center fielder Juan Lagares was a late scratch on Wednesday after his previous thumb injury flared up, resulting in him being unable to close his hand.

He had the thumb wrapped after the game and will be examined by team doctors, manager Terry Collins said after the game.

Initially expected to bat in the leadoff spot, he was replaced in the lineup by Kelly Johnson, who played in left field and homered in tonight’s 11-2 win.

Lagares had been previously diagnosed with a partially torn ligament in his thumb, which he suffered while making a diving catch. He may eventually need surgery for the injury but he hoping to play through it for the remainder of the season.

Terry Collins expressed great concern, reminding reporters he was already missing three key players.
