Update:

Jenrry Mejia has inflammation in his throwing elbow and will be placed on the 15-day disabled list, the team announced.

Mejia  received a cortisone shot and he will not be available to pitch for at least 10 days, according to the team.

Minor league reliever Erik Goeddel will take Mejia’s spot on the roster. Goeddel posted a 3.86 ERA during spring training.

Terry Collins said set-up man Jeurys Familia will take over in the ninth inning.

According to Mike Puma on Twitter, Mets closer Jenrry Mejia has no structural damage in his elbow, just inflammation. Mejia will receive a cortisone shot to help combat the inflammation.

This is good news for the Mets. Really good news. Mejia was so good for us after taking over as the closer last season, and I’m just so glad that we didn’t lose another pitcher to a torn elbow ligament. Whew.

However, Mejia didn’t pitch particularly well in Spring, so I won’t feel 100% okay about the situation until I see Mejia close out a game and seal it with his signature STOMP!

Elbow problems are touchy, so it’s still something I’ll have in the back of my mind, but it’s not as serious as it could have been, and for that I’m thankful.

I don’t know if this will require a DL stint, but Mejia will certainly get several days off to rest his elbow until the swelling goes down and he feels comfortable to throw.

The only good thing that comes out of that is that we will get to see Jeurys Famila close out games for the time being, and after his electric performance on Opening Day, and the solid season he had last year, I’m excited.

Even when Mejia returns, I can still see the possibility of Familia taking over the reigns of closer at some point this season. He definitely has the stuff.

For once, we didn’t get devastating news in regards to an injury. Let’s go Mets!
