The New York Mets rotation suffered another blow on Tuesday, as rookie David Peterson is heading to the injured list with shoulder fatigue. Peterson’s IL stint will be retroactive to August 14th, a day after his last start.
The 24-year-old was supposed to make his fifth start of the season tonight, but in his place Corey Oswalt has been recalled from the team’s alternate training site in Brooklyn. Oswalt has made one appearance this year on July 26th, when he allowed five runs across four inning of relief against the Atlanta Braves. Oswalt allowed three home runs in that game.
Across his career, Oswalt has made 12 starts, all of which came in 2018. That year he pitched to a 4.72 ERA with 17 walks and 39 strikeouts. Last year, the 26-year-old made 16 starts at Triple-A and went 10-4 with a 2.91 ERA (28 earned runs/86.2 innings) with 15 walks and 79 punchouts.
Along with Oswalt, Drew Smith has been recalled to the active roster, after being optioned to the alternate site just four days ago. Smith has been a bright spot out of the bullpen this year, pitching to a 3.00 ERA with six strikeouts in six innings pitched.
To make room for Smith on the roster, the Mets optioned Franklyn Kilome back to the alternate site. Kilome gave the Mets four innings of relief in Monday night’s blowout victory over the Marlins, earning his first big league save in the process.
The Mets hope that Peterson will not miss significant time with this injury, as he has been the best starter in the rotation outside of Jacob deGrom. Through four starts, the left-hander has pitched to a 3-1 record, with a 2.91 ERA.
