After five days of stagnation while in COVID protocol and ahead of their nine-games-in-six-days stretch, the Mets announced a slew of roster moves on Tuesday.

Most notably, infielder Andrés Giménez and catcher Tomás Nido were placed on the injured list for undisclosed reasons.

Catcher Patrick Mazeika and outfielder Juan Lagares were added to the 40-man and active rosters and catcher Ali Sánchez was named as the 29th man for Tuesday’s doubleheader.

Additionally, minor league field coordinator Kevin Boles has temporarily joined the major league coaching staff and will coach first base. Quality control coach Brian Schneider will assume bench coach responsibilities and Tony DeFrancesco will slide over from the first base coaching box to third base.

Hensley Meulens and Gary DiSarcina are not currently with the team.

Presumably, Giménez and Nido were among those who remained in Miami when the rest of the team traveled back to New York on Thursday night. Placement on the COVID-related injured list does not require a positive test and can be used for players who might have been exposed to positive individuals.

Mazeika and Lagares join the team from the Alternate Training Site in Brooklyn and will become the 16th and 17th players to make their Mets debut in 2020.

Mazeika was the organization’s eighth-round draft pick in 2015 from Stetson University (also known as Jacob deGrom’s alma mater). In five minor league seasons, the last two of which were spent at Double-A Binghamton, he has hit .278 with a .798 OPS. He’s primarily been a catcher throughout his career but saw nearly as much time at first base in 2019.

Lagares, now 31, rejoins the major league team after seven years in Queens from 2013-2019. After becoming a free agent following last season, he latched on with the San Diego Padres on a minor league deal but was released after failing to make their 60-man Player Pool over the summer.

Known for his defense, Lagares won a Gold Glove in 2014 and finished in the top three in defensive WAR in the National League three times (2013, 2014, 2017).

Following today’s moves, the Mets’ 40-man roster remains at 38 players and their 60-man Player Pool is at 57.

Rick Porcello will get the ball in the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Marlins, with Seth Lugo scheduled to start the second game. Jacob deGrom will return to the mound on Wednesday.

Michael Wacha and David Peterson, both on the injured list with minor shoulder ailments, both threw at a staggered team workout on Monday and could be available to start this week.

Steven Matz is not available out of the bullpen on Tuesday and could be a candidate to start after initially losing his spot in the rotation to Lugo.
