rafael montero

After the New York Mets defeated the Atlanta Braves by a score of 6-3 on Friday night, they optioned right-hander Rafael Montero to Triple-A Las Vegas to clear a spot on the roster for Jacob deGrom.

Montero, 25, appeared in just two games but got hit pretty hard, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk in 2.0 innings pitched for a 11.59 ERA.

DeGrom, 27, threw a successful bullpen on Friday after missing a couple of starts due to the birth of his son, while also dealing with a sore right lat issue. The good news is that the baby is home and doing fine, and his lat is now fully healed.

In his only start this season, deGrom allowed just one run on five hits in 6.0 innings while striking out six. He is slated to pitch in the series finale on Sunday against the Braves at Turner Field.

Fellow righty Logan Verrett , who filled in fantastically for deGrom, will remain on the roster and likely serve in a long relief role. Nice job by the Mets.
