According to Anthony Dicomo of MLB.com, the New York Mets have optioned infielder Luis Guillorme down to Triple-A Syracuse, and in a corresponding roster move they have recalled right-hander Drew Gagnon.
Despite a strong showing in Spring Training, Guillorme hasn’t been given much playing time this season due to the depth on the Mets roster. Over the first two weeks, he appeared in just eight games and was 1-for-9 with four strikeouts. Despite the lack of results at the plate, Guillorme showed off his quick hands by turning some stellar double plays at second.
Gagnon returns to the big leagues after making five appearances with the Mets last season. He struggled a bit, as he made one start and posted a 5.25 ERA and 5.74 FIP in 12 innings of work. Although, he has gotten off to a strong start this season in Syracuse. Over two starts, he has allowed just one earned run and struck out eight.
The Mets are now carrying 13 pitchers on their roster, and the departure of Guillorme leaves them short a backup shortstop behind Amed Rosario for the time being. In case emergency, Jeff McNeil has 44 games at shortstop under his belt during his career.
Also Dicomo pointed out, Todd Frazier has taken some reps there during his rehab, and he is expected to likely be back sometime during the series with the Phillies.
