The New York Mets (40-34) were defeated by the Atlanta Braves (26-49) by a score of 5-2 at Turner Field Sunday afternoon.  With the loss the Mets will temporarily fall 2.5 games back of the Washington Nationals.

Pitching:

Bartolo Colon was on the mound today and the wily vet was very good.  Colon went seven innings giving up one run, while walking one, and striking out two.

In the top of the first inning, after Colon quickly retired the first two batters, Mets killer Freddie Freeman jacked a home run to left center field.  That would be all for any damage against Colon today.

Antonio Bastardo came on in the eighth inning and he was awful.  Bastardo gave up two hits, a walk, a run, and a balk before being pulled from the game without recording an out.

Logan Verrett came in and tried to clean up the mess and failed.  Verrett immediately gave up a three run home run to Adonis Garcia to give the Braves a 5-0 lead and put the game out of reach.

Offense:

Bud Norris was on his game today and he shut the Mets offense completely down.  Norris was able to pitch seven shutout innings for the Braves giving up only four hits.

After Jim Johnson pitched a scoreless eighth, Alexi Ogando came in to try and shut the door in the ninth.

Matt Reynolds led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on an error.  Yoenis Cespedes grounded out but Reynolds came home giving the Mets their first run of the day. The Mets still weren’t done trying to make a rally.  Neil Walker followed with a double.  After James Loney popped out, Wilmer Flores followed with an RBI single cutting the lead to 5-2.  Brandon Nimmo struck out to end the threat.
