The way things had been going, it wouldn’t be surprising if most Mets fans thought this game would end up something like 1-0 or 2-0 or so as Phillies starter Aaron Nola was dealing and the Mets offense was reeling. And why not? The New York Mets had just been swept twice, scoring only 19 runs in their last seven games. They had also lost seven of eight to the Phils (69-64) and six straight at Citizens Bank Park.

But after a shuffle of the line-up by Mickey Callaway putting Pete Alonso in the two hole and Joe Panik in the five spot, the Mets scored 11 runs in the final three innings to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies, 11-5. The win by the Mets (68-66) snapped a six-game losing streak and prevented the Mets from falling back to the .500 mark. (box score)

Mets starter Zack Wheeler rebounded after three sub-par outings and matched the Phillies’ ace allowing only one run.

Todd Frazier matched a career high with six-RBIs. Wilson Ramos, Amed Rosario and Michael Conforto (who surpassed his career-high in homers in a season) each had big hits in the game.

Offense

The New York Mets managed 12 hits against the Phillies on Friday.

Michael Conforto laced his 23rd double of the year in the first inning, but Phillies’ starter Aaron Nola struck out Jeff McNeil, Pete Alonso and J.D. Davis to retire the side.

The offense was quiet as the Mets went hitless until the sixth. In the sixth, Pete Alonso broke an 0-for-11 skein as he singled to left. It was the 25th straight game Alonso has reached base safely, the longest streak in the majors. Unfortunately, the Mets were unable to score in the frame.

The Mets finally tied the score in the seventh. J.D. Davis walked to open the frame, followed by a single by Joe Panik to put two runners on with no one out. After a pop-out by Amed Rosario. Todd Frazier, who was 0-for-17 against Nola, was hit by a curve ball to load the bases. Mickey Callaway sent Wilson Ramos up to pinch hit and as he as done so often this year, he hit a hard single to center to plate Davis. Ramos now has a 23-game hitting streak. The RBI was Ramos’ 65th of the year. He is now 36-for-113 with RISP this year, a .319 BA.

Jose Alvarez came in to pitch for the Phillies and he put out the fire as he got Rajai Davis to line-out and McNeil to pop-out to end the threat, and limit the Mets to just one run.

Mike Morin entered the game in the eighth to pitch for the Phils. Alonso and Conforto each singled to start the inning. One batter later, Panik walked to load the bases. Rosario then followed with a huge single to center to plate two runs and give the Mets a 3-1 lead.

Phillies manager Gabe Kapler made another pitching change, bringing in Jared Hughes. Hughes was greeted by Frazier who launched a line-drive home run to left, a 3-run shot, to give the Mets a 6-1 lead. It was Frazier’s 17th homer of the year. He now has 54 RBIs.

The Mets tacked on five more runs on the ninth off of Edgar Garcia. Alonso singled for his third hit of the game. Conforto followed with a 2-run homer to right center to make the score 8-1. It was Conforto’s third hit of the game as well. He now has 28 home runs which is a new career high. Michael has 79 RBIs.

New York wasn’t done in the ninth. J.D. Davis walked and was sent to third on Panik’s 19th double of the year. One batter later, Frazier hit his second three-run homer of the game to make the game a laugher at 11-1. For Frazier, it was his 18th homer of the year. His six-RBI night tied a career high for the Met third baseman.

Pitching

Zack made his 26th start of the season versus the Phils.

In the first, he escaped mild trouble when two reached base. He then pitched a 1-2-3 second.

Aaron Nola hit a double to lead off the third. It was his first extra-base hit of the season and third of his career. Wheeler buckled down and got the next three in order including a second strike out of Bryce Harper, his 152nd punch out of the year.

The Phillies broke through in the fifth to score the first run of the game. Adam Haseley led off with a single to right. He was sacrificed to second by Nola. Corey Dickerson followed with a single, moving Haseley to third. J.T. Realmuto was next and he hit a shallow fly to center which Conforto sprawled and made a nice catch, but Haseley broke for the plate and scored on the sacrifice fly.

Things could have been worse in the fifth. Harper walked to put runners on first and second. Rhys Hoskins was next and he singled to Davis in left. Davis threw a strike to catcher Rene Rivera to nab Dickerson at the plate. The Phillies challenged the call, but it was upheld and the score remained 1-0.

Wheeler got into immediate trouble in the sixth as Jean Segura doubled on a bloop fly to left. It was Segura’s 31st double of the year. He moved to third on a long fly by Cesar Hernandez. Wheeler then got a huge strikeout when he got Scott Kingery swinging. The inning ended on a harmless grounder to third by Nola.

Wheeler’s night came to end at the end of the sixth. He pitched well against a strong line-up. His final line was: 6 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 97 pitches (66 strikes).

Justin Wilson pitched an effective seventh inning. He worked around a lead-off single by Corey Dickerson. But he was erased on a double play by Harper to keep the Phils off the board.

Edwin Diaz came in to pitch the eighth. Diaz was coming off a dominant 1-2-3  inning against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday. He struck out the side on 13 pitches. On Friday, Diaz also pitched a clean inning striking out two (Segura and Hernandez).

Chris Mazza entered the game to mop up. He gave up four runs but was able to retire the Phils and prevent another pitcher to be used out of the bullpen.

On Deck

The Mets face an old friend on Saturday in game two of the three game set against the Phils. Jason Vargas (6-6, 4.09 ERA) will be making his sixth start for the Phillies since being traded from the Mets. He is 0-1 with 4.34 ERA with Philadelphia.

Steven Matz (8-8, 4.06 ERA) will take the ball for New York. He has been battling blister problems for weeks but Matz has not missed a start and in fact has pitched very well of late. In his last four starts, he has allowed only five earned runs in 25 innings pitched. Matz will be making his fifth appearance against the Phillies on Saturday.

The game will be telecast on SNY and broadcast on WCBS-880 AM. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
