While the Mets didn’t make the biggest of splashes before the trade deadline, it looks like the approach that they took may have been the right one on the offensive side of things. They created a strong platoon at the DH position, which was a huge weakness for the Mets leading up to the deadline.

The first acquisition was Daniel Vogelbach who was acquired to be the Mets’ weapon against right-handed pitchers. On the season, Vogelbach has hit 13 home runs with 31 RBIs while maintaining a slash line of .275/.384/.550 in 230 plate appearances against right-handed pitching.

All of his homers this season have comes against RHP and he’s continued the trend since joining the Mets. On Wednesday, Vogelbach hit a grand slam against the Nationals and he followed that by hitting another home run on Thursday against the Braves. Vogelbach went 2-for-4 in the Mets’ big 6-4 win over the second place Braves.

The other acquisition the Mets made to improve another position was Tyler Naquin from the Reds to bolster their outfield. Naquin has also been lethal against right-handed pitching as he has collected seven home runs and 31 RBIs in 174 plate appearances against the RHPs. He’s also sporting an impressive line vs righties at .277/.339/.522 for the season.

In his Citi Field debut, Naquin brought all of the fireworks as he launched not one but two home runs against the division rival Braves. Naquin finished the game going 2-for-4 and helping the Mets pull off a 6-4 victory to extend their division lead to 4.5 games. He joined Aaron Altherr and Rajai Davis as the only Mets to hit a home run in their first at-bat at Citi Field.

Vogelbach has a 1.074 OPS in 10 games with the Mets and Naquin’s is at 1.187 after five games.

While we have yet to see the debut of Darin Ruf, it may be safe to say that the Mets are in great hands with the platoon of Naquin-Vogelbach-Ruf.
